Default Good, cheap rod tubes and socks

Anyone know where I can find some decent quality rod tubes and socks for cheap. I don't need anything special, just something to hold the rods I'm building. I know I could make something out of PVC, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it (don't have any cutting tools or anything).

I know you said something other than PVC, but it is the cheapest and you don't need any special tools. The only thing I used was a hacksaw. I didn't even have to glue on the end caps. The fit was tight enough that they just stay on. As for socks, I went to the local fly shop and he had extra rod socks lying around. He sold me one for $5. Worth checking out if you have a shop near you.

Hmmm, thats a good point about asking a local shop. Didn't consider that. The guys at my local Orvis know me and they are all very nice so maybe they will let me pawn a few off them.

Sierra Trading Post has rod tubes. However they say "Sage" on them and that would be a deal breaker for me. They're not cheap either.

You might check around for rod socks. I found some at W*lmart one time, marked down to 25cents. I bought them all.

As for PVC..... you could probably cut it with a steak knife if you had to. There's nothing to it.

Yeah I saw them at sierra trading post too. The Sage name wasn't a deal breaker, but the price was. Most of them were also integrated with the reel cover which I don't like.

They'd probably assemble it for you N/C
I read a post on another board recently where a guy bought a **** rod off the big auction site just for the tube and the nickle silver real seat that he intended on recycling to another rod.

Not sure what your budget is, but I'd bet you can find them at most rod building suppliers. Off the top of my head, here are a few options.

Hook & Hackle:

Rod Cases, Tubes & Bags-Hook & Hackle

Feather-Craft:

Feather-Craft Fly Fishing :: Rod Cases & Rod Transport

J Stockard:

JS Fly Fishing: Rod Building, Fly Tying: Rod Building

Cabelas:

Boating Rod Tubes - Fishing Rod Tubes - Boat Rod Cove : Cabela's

I like this one from Cabelas
I have the same thing from Orvis that for some reason they discontinued years ago.
I carry four 4piece saltwater rods in mine and it takes up almost no space

Rod socks.... know anyone with a sewing machine. They are not difficult. Measure twice, cut once. fold, buzz up the sides, turn inside out, buzz in the partitions. Watched an experienced seamstress buzz one togeather in under 15 minutes out of some 'scrap' linen.
