Peace,

I haven't fished San Simeon before, but have fished numerous places along the California coast. I would use an 8 wt. with sinking line. Small Clouser patterns should serve you well. I tie my surf flies in sizes ranging from 1/0 to 10. I get the most action on size 8 flies.

Right now, the corbina are thick along the coast, but they are very spooky. Cast your fly parallel to the shore and let the wave action grab it off the beach. The corbina ride the swells up to the beach to get to the sand crab beds on an incoming tide. They'll grab your fly in just inches of water. If they see you, it's all over. If you cast straight out and strip in, you might get hit at the end of the strip as you're about to lift your fly out of the water. That's because they're right at your feet.

Surf perch, croaker, guitar fish, and leopard sharks should all be cruising around up there. Every now and then, fly fishers will catch halibut or white sea bass from the shore. The occasional striped bass can be had as well.

Good luck up there.

Make sure we get pictures and a report LOL. I am under the influence of Morphinr for another week and will be doing no fishing for probably 3 more weeks so I must live vicariously through you all.
