Thumbs up Amazing masterstroke!!! AGAIN...

On Thursday I went fishing with my friend Batistou,in the morning we spent some hours on a section where there are dace but didn’t manage to land any in spite of all our efforts and multiple changes of fly….In the afternoon we moved to the “olive trees” section. When we arrived I located a huge chub around 24 which was feeding,we crawled behind the bushes.Batistou hid behind a little tree downstream while I was watching the fish through the foliage. On the first cast the fly hit the water on the back of the chub which turned, followed the fly and opened his big mouth….Batistou was so excited he stroke up and took out the fly of his mouth….can’t tell you what my friend’s reaction was ….it would be censored.Fortunately I located another one in the shade near the other bank and he could land him.We went on fishing…caught a few more fish…”broke our teeth”on a few dace.As it was hot we were happy to reach a little canal which runs out of a micro turbine. The place is shaded the water cool and oxygenated, carps and big chub love it.It was my turn to miss a big guy!!!!We kept quiet for a while and watched all the fish swimming around the canal….JP look!!! a carp has just risen….I couldn’t believe it,but the fish rose again…I told Batistou to take my rod and have a try….you never know….and the carp gently rose and caught the fly!!!Batistou had just hooked a submarine!!!The carp fought in the canal for at least fifteen minutes then decided to swim downstream, stopped twice then started again!!!!We both followed the fish for about two hundred yards.I was walking on the bank shouting encouragement and advice like mad!!!We finally reached a pool by the broken bridge ,the fish was getting tired,so was Batistou. After a few more rushes ,the fish was in sight and I could net him…a part of him…Wow what a fight and what an exploit to catch such a fish on a 10’ 4wt rod on a 5X tippet and a size 14 fly(Batistou special)Hats off my friend!!!!We will remember this fish all our lives!

JP: Congrats to you and Batistou for teaming up and landing that big carp, especially on such a small fly!

Great story JP,

I read with interest these tales of fishing in France. You and your friend make the best sport of whatever is in those waters and that is commendable for sure! I fished my home river all day yesterday and although there were hundreds of chum salmon hugging the bottom I could not raise one to my flies. I managed a few small trout from a favorite stretch but still the monster rainbow eludes me. I want to catch a rainbow like the carp Batistou is holding.

Go get them Jean Paul,

I know the broken bridge and the deep pool next to it, very well!

Great story, J-P, and great job on the part of Batistou in landing him (on a Batistou Special, no less............). Great fly!

Great story JP, don't know how I missed it earlier. You are without doubt a clear water specialist.

Hey JP,

I just noticed that Batistou is 6'5" tall, according to my doctor I am not only 6'4". I am shrinking I had always thought that when you come to America I would come to meet you wherever you were at. Now I know you will feel at home with a tall guy fishing with you

I was thinking of the 'mice' as a gift for my sister but may have stumbled onto something else but thanks for sending more pictures
