I always found dynamite was great for dam repair, but then I might have read too much Edward Abbey. Good for the kids and other volunteers though. Without the sculpins, there will be no trout.

Amazing article Fred. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I love stories when everyone gets out to help. Stories like that have a sense of pride and make everyone feel good.

Best part is, that once you've put some sweat into a place you feel you own it. It will keep those kids concerned about that river for life.

I'm still a member (age 16-17 to 71) of the "Steelhead Trout Club of Washington," our work parties at Hatcheries (Skagit/Skykomish River's in the main) were chain saws/shovels/back breaking labor back in my young day (up to 1984 when I moved to Kalifornia).

Only one 'bad experience,' cleaning up a bit of stream and stepped into 'quick sand.' Sank like a rock up to my middle. DON'T MOVE OR IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE!

Older Guy in the parking lot asked 'Where's Fred?' (I'm 17?) and a couple came down to find me. Next couple of hours were a total cluster bomb as they dug me out. Tree's cut down and over the 'pit,' guys sitting on same holding on to my arms. Rest dug like crazy to get me out of this stuff.

Only (almost) stepped into this stuff once more; one foot, feel, and back right away.

ROFL! Florida boy says you lie on your back (max surface area) and gently back stroke and kick out. Rumor (because I've never been dumb enough to step in it don't 'cha know), says this works. Still it proves my point. You remember that river still and will help it. So will these kids. Its good for them, good for the river, and good for the future generations they'll influence. As the man said, I love these stories.

Fred: That was a great article to read, thank for sharing! Good to see those two classrooms get involved.

Good article, Fred. It is indeed good to read things like that. If asked in the future about the best days they had in school, you can bet those days will be in the list. Some will also likely be among the organizers of such operations in the future as well.

Thanks for the post.
