Question When the Ice keeps you out...

When the ice keeps you out of the river what do you do
to quench that desire to get your line wet & fish ?

1. Do you tie up a storm & replenish your fly boxes ?
2. Do you just wait it out & hope it melts soon ?
3. Do you just watch fishing shows & dream ?

This is the first year for sometime that Michigan weather has
closed some of my usual haunts & therefore I have not gotten
"in the water" since early January. Not only are they pretty much
totally froze over, but water levels are VERY HIGH.

That was the last time I took the drift boat out & I felt like the
captain of the Titanic. There were rather large ice chunks coming
down river hitting the boat & one time actually moved the well
anchored boat. So needless to say I moved to safer waters & have
not been out since. Normally I spend a fair portion of the winter
tying up new flies & replacing any that were lost to the rocks,
or trees. The "itch" seriously needs scratched.

How about were you are ? What are you doing ?

Now's the time I try to get that damm honeydo list out of the way so most of it is clear when the weather breaks.

Hi tie one on,

Gee, I hate to tell you but winter fishing down here in Florida can be super. I am still using Sun Block. Bass are spawning and that means shallow water and some of our best fly fishing for Bass.

Go icefishing, nymphs work well under the ice for panfish, just dont try casting in a ice house, its not a pritty sight. I'm in ND so I should know how long and borring the ice periods are

Winter fishing in the tropical weather of Montana has also been great. Find some tailwaters or some spring creeks, or take up ice fishing.

I did forget to mention that I do go ice fishing when the
opportunity presents itself. My Bud I normally go out with
had some heart surgery in December, so we have not made
it out just yet.

I also have a great little grub nymph I tie that does work
great thru the ice, as well as in the river. It's tied on a scud
hook with natural nymph skin & peacock hurl. After I finish
with a whip finish I use a reddish/brown marker to color the
skin, then apply hard as nails to seal it off. Works great on
most fish.

Thanks for thr responses, best of luck Frank with the largemouth,

Tie One On
