Default Fly fishing shows -any to choose from?

On to the real question of the day-what channels and programs actually have fly fishing TV shows on them?

My other question comes about from a show on Versus and Napa’s North to Alaska. Larry Csonka, former NFL RB for Miami was out fishing in Ninilchik, AK for Silvers, he’s in what looks to be a rubber raft with part of the bottom cut out to stand through in the shallow areas and to put his legs through for comfort I guess. Others are in inflatable kayaks. What in the world is Larry in? It is shown again on 2/29 on Versus 7:30pm and 3/1 at 2:30am and 2:00pm –check your local listing

Hi dog,

Here is a link to a post about that boat with some good pictures. That boat probably has been sold but you might try sending a PM to the fellow who made the post. If he has sold it he may give you an honest opinion about the boat.

The front floor section is cut out so you can use flippers to help control the boat. You are right that it would also be helpful for standing in shallow water. It is not a design that I would want but we all have our preferences. Keep in mind that I have never seen or rowed one of these boats.

Fly fishing shows are pretty slim on TV. There use to be more but not too many now. The trouble with most fly fishing shows that are on TV do not provide and instructions and are just for entertainment. It is nice to see some of the places they are fishing and you can see how they are casting and fighting the fish. But that is about it. I don't think Zonka is an accomplished fly fisherman. He seems to be dependent on guides in order to catch fish. That is nothing against Zonka, it is the way of fly fishing shows on TV. They make a deal with a lodge or outfitter to advertise their outfit if they take them fishing. I watch Zonka because he is in Alaska and has fished some of the same places I have fished with my partner.

Before my Alaska fishing partner died we talked fishing every time I called. I asked him one day if he watched some of the shows about fishing in Alaska. He Said "No, I don't watch them because it makes me sad". We were lucky enough to fish one of the greatest fly fishing areas in the world and we always planned on going back to fish. His health failed and the realization of not ever getting back was too much for him to think about.

Frank

Sad about your friend, Frank.

Flyfishing shows also don't generate the sponsor revenue like bass and other species. Flyfishing doesn't have the have the numbers of participants or appeal to sponsors. It's a lot more profitable for companies to advertise a bass boat on a show than a fly rod.

One show I did like was a tournament, (Flyfishing Masters??) I think on Versus. Two man teams from different regions in elimination format. There was also a "Flyfishing the World." It could be interesting.

In addition to the two already mentioned, there is also a show called Familiar Waters hosted by a Former NFL QB that I had never heard of named Mike Palawski. It's a little heavy on the "it's a toad" and "fish-on" kind of stuff but they fish some great places.

I've also seen some fly content on Hunt Fish Cook but that show covers a lot of ground.

I skip that stuff and surf Youtube for videos about flyfishing. Some are really good. Like the stuff out of England and New Zealand. Alot of stuff on Public TV shows is getting out on youtube. Short watching, not full length, but entertaining.

TU is starting a show this spring that will be traveling around the country promoting the work that they have done on streams. They will be traveling with an Airstream camper painted up like a trout. The show will be on the outdoor channel I believe.

Hello Dogger,

I did not see the show but maybe it was an inflatble like the one in Trout Bum Diaries. Here is a link to that sponsor.

I always liked "Flyfishing the world" with John Barrett also, havn't seen it on(or much of anything with F/F for that matter) for ages.
He had a pretty good show on photography too, beautiful scenery in both shows.
You can get "FFTW" on Amazon, looks like current stuff.

Another guy I enjoyed watching was Tim Linehan on "T.U." I think has a lodge and is guiding again on the Kootnai River in Montana.
