Good morning all....
Has anyone tied with blind eye hooks, and what did you use to create the eye of the hook?

I tie on them pretty much every week. I use Silk worm gut. I tie display flies pretty much exclusively. If you're going to fish, you can still use gut, but its not cost effective. Use dacron as previously mentioned.

Here's an example of a silk gut eyed fly

Are blind eye hooks more of just a throw back way of tying or is there a positive to using an eye that's tied on?

It's how it was done in the beginning before hooks were made with eyes.

Something I recall....

English soldiers were stationed in the Provinces of North America and when they came they also brought their hobbies, fishing for salmon being one. They used the British styled full dressed salmon fly patterns with the blind eye hook and the gut loop for attaching the fly.

The problem was rotten gut....they were losing fish and flies !

It was somewhat curable when they started throwing half hitches of tippet behind the loop of gut. Low and behold they found that attaching the fly and having the tippet at a ninety degree angle to the shank the fly swam in an attractive way to the salmon......the birth of the "riffle hitch".
