Default Re: split shots

Hmmm...would love to know the answer to this myself LOL! With my old eyes, I kinda balance them (opening facing down) and grab 'em with a pair of hemostats. I then put the leader in the opening and give the hemos a squeeze. It works, but it's still a pain.

Hi to all,

I have a pair of forceps that have small indents on the inside of the jaw designed for holding the split shot and squeezing the shot shut. I have had them for a long time and don't see them any more. You can also get a needle nose pliers like the picture. You use the holes to squeeze the shot. If you want to make one your self you could buy the smaller needle pliers and make your own indents to hold the shot. You could drill some but you may have to anneal them first. Or you could use a Dremel tool and grind the indents. I prefer the indents to be on the face of one jaw instead of on the side like the picture. That way it is easier to hold the shot while you place the leader in the slot and squeeze it shut.

The cutting section can be used to open the split shot. Grind the edges dull and use them to force open the shot. It will work better than your fingernail.

Frank
