Default an optomistic shot in the dark

hey guys Jake here in Crested Butte
Ive been wondering what are the chances that a person that is not a guide
could get a chance to be a product tester.
I own two rods, two reels, a pair of hole filled waders, etc.
I fish a whole lot, but I don't have the extra money to buy "the good stuff"
like sharkskin fly line, top of the line waders,or the expensive tippets even though I fish like a med. student studies.
My gear seems to wear out faster than I can afford to replace it with more. (speaking of flyline and waders mostly.)
I was wondering if you knew any companies that were looking for legitament testers for their gear that will spend time with their products and send back thoughtful feedback.
thanks

Write a letter to the companies you'd like to be a tester for and see what they say. You never get anything unless you ask!!

Hi overefined,

This is a hard thing to accomplish. It will take some effort and you need to be a good writer. The biggest problem you have to overcome is you are not known to the fishing industry. They want people to review their products that are know to the public and have an avenue to publish their results in a known publication. The powers who are interested in field testing want to do it themselves (a free trip) or by so called experts.

Following up on Davo's comments, you need to make contact with the companies. Don't expect to be received with open arms. They usually have there own testing network and it is hard to penetrate their procedure. If you wanted to buy a rod would you like to read a review from Joe Dokes or from Lefty Kreh. Just an example.

What I would do is buy a product from a manufacture and write a review and send it along with a request to test other products. If you are a good writer and reviewer they may be interested. But don't expect them to give you free equipment. They may want it back after your review it.

Frank

Buy from the classified sections in forums. You can get great used equipment for quite a bit less than retail.
