Question New Fly patterns ??

If you get any flyfishing/fly tying magazines & see a fly
that really looks great, do you tie up a few for your box ?

If you don't have the needed materials, do you run out &
get them ? Do you ever substitute one material because
you don't have what the pattern calls for ?

Since I started tying tube flies I'm finding a great variety of
patterns, that can be changed simply by changing the back
portion of the fly where the hook resides. Same fly upfront,
different backside.

I happened to find a new tube pattern for a Muddler that takes
less time to tie & works just as well.

Hi tie one on,

When I was tying flies I don't think I ever tried to duplicate the recipe exactly. It seemed like I was always substituting materials of one type or another. I tried to use something that was the same color. For instance when I needed a white hair wing I would use goat, sheep, buck tail or calf according to what I had on hand.

When I first fished for King Salmon I tied up some Thor flies from Kaufmann's catalog. I had no recipe and just used what it look like in the picture. I ended up using the wrong color of hackle but the fish didn't know it. I caught my first King on one of those flies and I didn't know I tied it wrong until I made a trip to Washington from Alaska for business. It wasn't too far off but it definitely was not the Thor that Kaufmann's was selling at that time.

I still wish we could see a couple of your tube flies. How are you doing with your boat. You should be an old pro now with a season under your belt?

Frank

Thanks for your thoughts Frank.

Many times I will do the same as you did with your flies by
using a variety of different materials & make my own version.

I have tried to upload a couple of digital pics of some of my
tube flies, but it gave me a limitation warning each time.

Have not been out in the boat for about two weeks. Wanted to
go out today, but had a home plumbing job to do, oh well.

Rowing & controlling the boat has become, almost dare I say
second nature. It's so easy to guide, turn, etc. The best part
is going to spots on the river that are totally un-wadeable &
finding fish.

Yup! When I find a good pattern in a magazine, I will tie it up. If I don't have the materials I will run to cabela's and get them since the store it right by my house. I feel very lucky for that. I do end up spending alot of money in there. I love finding new stuff to tie up.
