axle27,

I mix brands all the time with no ill effect. Like Joni, I have no problem mixing mono and fluorocarbon either. I often use a loop to loop connection as you describe, sometimes with Amnesia, sometimes with Ande and others. It depends on the purpose of the line and leader..

I do notice a difference in materials between the "good" stuff and the "cheap stuff" in most of the fishing I do. For the amount of material you are likely to use don't skimp too much on the quality.

If the fishing you do is mostly trout fishing, you can economize by attaching a 4x leader to your fly line. With no problem under most conditions, you can add tippet two sizes lighter. In other words, you can easily turn that leader into a 5x or 6x leader by attaching tippet with either a surgeon or blood knot. If you need to go lighter simply add a short piece (10 or 12") or 5x and then go to 7x. If where you fish seldom require those light tippets, the same formula works pretty well when you start with a 3x leader. Now, as long as you don't completely and hopelessly foul your entire leader, you can go the whole season on one or two leaders.

Joe's right about that. I got a cheap spool of Cortland 6x and the stuff would break just tightening the knot. Stay with the good stuff.
