First time out
I was out with the family camping this past weekend. So, I took along my 5wt. and my 4wt. to get in some fishing.
I didn't have much time as it was late evening, but I took my oldest son with me to a lake that was close to the campsite.
I fished the 4wt. with a yellow popper. There was alot of boating activity, so I was reduced to keeping the fly rather close to shore so I could see its movement. I managed to catch four panfish in about an hour of fishing. Now, these were not keepers by almost any stretch of the imagination, unless you call catching baitfish keepers. My son was ribbing me about how small some of them were (one was only a bit longer than my middle finger), but I told him that catching large fish was not the point at the moment.
What my real reason for doing this was to see a fish take a fly that was either on the surface or just under the surface. It was really, really fun to watch that popper being taken. It also helped me to practice casting and getting the fly to where I wanted it. I checked the leader every other cast for wind knots (only had one).
All in all, I was very pleased with the short outing.
We stopped by one of my favorite trout streams on the way home for a rest and do some fishing. Since the place I stopped at was right across the road from a tourist trap, I figured that this place was hit pretty hard most of the time. I didn't expect much. I pulled out the 5wt and tied on a black beetle. I got a few strikes, but nothing else.
I'm on my way.....I got the disease, bad....
It's not the heat, it's the stupidity.
What manner of jackassery will I be subjected to today?
