Some eastern rivers are called Kills. For example: the Batten Kill or the Beaver Kill? Why is this? I've looked Kill up in the dictionary and it says nothing about a body of water. Is Kill the same as River? What's a Kill?

If memory serves me correctly, the term "kill" is/was regional (the greater New York State area) used to describe a relatively fast stream. In Virginia tha term used to describe the same sort of stream is/was "run" as in Bull Run.

Kill

Thanks. Two great answers. However, I think the gusest's answer is most correct. Sorry Cliff. The be-kind-to-animal activists may want to kill you for that one.

definition of kill
A channel or arm of the sea; a river; a stream; as, the channel between Staten Island and Bergen Neck is the Kill van Kull, or the Kills; -- used also in composition; as, Schuylkill, Catskill, etc.

From the Brainy Dictionary. :shocking:

Looks like JB is positioning himself to be in the running for chief of the "big brain" tribe. JK.

On that topic, since you get to fish some of the finest trout water in the world, maybe you can help us prove that those surroundings make one smarter.

I actually used to live within five miles of the Schuylkill (pronounced "skookul", in Norristown, PA. I will defend it for the rest of my life as a beautiful area, although I would prefer to buy a home in West Conshohocken. (south of the river)

Some of you may already know this, but a displaced Beluga whale was recently noticed in the Schuylkill, closer to downtown Philly.
