Default fishing emergers and sub surface flys

I'v fished drys, nymphs, wet flys. I have some flys called emergers, and subsurface , pupai emergers. Do you fish them like a nymph and a wet fly. How do you get them to stay not on the bottom but middle column of water and just under the surface. I guesse you don't use floatant.

I'm finding this out. But do you put anything on them like floatant or just fish them naturale.like a nymph or wet fly. i guesse slip shot will give you the different depts.

Emerger nymphs can be fished in a lot of ways. They can be dead drifted under an indicator or under a hopper or stonefly dry. They can be swung like a Steelhead streamer.

I use soft hackles as emergers regularly. I have used sinking leaders connected to floating lines. I have used sink tips also. Mostly I fish them with a floating line with a pinch of tungsten putty. This allows me to get the fly to depth. As the fly swings upward, I will usually feel the grab. A split shot will have the same effect.

I've taken to using micro shots recently. They are smaller than a BB so you can get a very light weight as it were. To adjust for more weight I'll use tungsten putty molded over the micro shot, this also helps keep the putty in place.
Sometimes if I want the emerger to work the water column just below the surface I'll apply a small amount of floatant on the leader about 8-10 inches from the fly.
