I had a '74 Westy (the love shack), and a 2001 Westy which was my fishing camp until someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse a little while after they were discontinued. Buses rule...

I was looking for a VW camper last year, but the half decent specimens
weren't cheap. I stumbled into a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo about
8 weeks ago, and that's going to be our FF'ing ride. The owner had given it
to his 3 sons to use while in college, and just wanted it off his mansion's
driveway!: $1,000! Plenty of room for gear, and a sweet ride.

I saw a video of a Jeep GC with a tent on top. The whole thing folded out
on a platform, and was pretty cool. Can't find it now, but here's a suicide
version : http://www.jeepworld.com/accessories...rokee/tent.htm
You can use the exhaust to heat the tent !

We looked for an older Land Cruiser, but they aren't cheap either!

Until a couple of years ago I had a Dodge Caravan that I had made into a camper.
It was cheap and got good mileage. What it did not have was good ground clearance and those engines tend to blow head gaskets.
Now my fish vehicle is a small pick-up with a cap. It's a very reliable 'camper' but not as comfortable to spend the night in as the mini-van

I used to have a Ford 150 P.U with a camper top cap. I wedged a fold out sleep sofa / love seat in the back up against the cab & just pulled it out to sleep. I had room for gear & stuff but just barely.. It was great for overnight trips & I went on a prolonged fishing trip out west in it. I finally traded it in for a Ford camper van & used that for a few years. Now I like Motels but that Volkswagon bus looks interesting, I had heard that they weren't being sold in the U.S.
