Default Re: shooting heads

A shooting head is a 30' or so front of a fly line, usually the tapered part. It is attached to the reel by a loop to loop method to a running line. Running line is just a level thin line, such as a coated fly line or monofilament. The usefulness of this setup allows the user to interchange the head portion to meet a particular fishing situation. I have heads for floating, intermediate(slow sink), type 2 type 4 and type 6 which are sinking heads of various speed descent. Shooting heads when cast properly can travel a considerable distance by having coils of running line in a shooting basket and the head will be cast allowing those coils to shoot thru the guides of your rod. I use mine mostly in salt water applications where I need to get a fly deep or cast against a stiff headwind. They are not so hot in shallow water applications where moving water is present, such as a river because a head cannot be mended very well. Steelheaders have been usng heads for a long time on big rivers, but with more choices available of sink-tip lines, they are less fashionable.
