Reel for 8 wt Sage Launch or Sage Flight?

Hi All,

Based on all the great input from this forum, I'm leaning towards picking up an 8 wt Sage Launch or an 8 wt Sage Flight rod. I will be trying both out in the next couple of weeks. I intend to use mostly for lake fishing largemouth but also for the occasional trip to the Chesapeake Bay and the MD/VA shore.

What large arbor, machined US reel would you recommend for these rods in terms of balance and performance? I'm thinking of the Ross Evolution 3.5 or the Lamson Litespeed 3.5. I want to buy a light, quality reel that will last and hold up for the occasional fishing in saltwater. Many thanks.

Hi Tony,

I am surprised that someone has not helped you out. Here is my 2 cents.

I am going to assume you are talking a 9' or 9' 6" rod. I am not a fan of too light of a reel on rods that will be used in saltwater or big fish fresh water. If you compare reels you will see the best saltwater reels all have some weight to them. I don't want any rod reel combination that feels tip heavy. So here are three suggestions considering you didn't set any cost limit.

I have an Evolution 3 on a 9' 6wt, and it definitely leaves the rod feeling
tip heavy.

Hi tonyb,

I should have included the Nautilus Feather Weight Plus. It may be more in line with your cost.

Hi Tony,

I just set up my Sage Xi2 for bonefish and had dozens of reels to select from. I'd have to agree with Frank, and after trying several reels I settled on the Ross Momentum LT. This is the next generation Momentum, which is lighter and more attractive. That being said, it's built like a tank and balances my Xi2 perfectly. This is a salt specific reel and the best value in a USA built reel I have found.

We carry the entire Sage rod line including the Sage Launch and Sage Flight rods in the Forum Fly Shop. When you purchase the rod and reel, you can choose any RIO Fly Line free, along with free backing, free loading, saltwater tapered leader, and free shipping. We ship your complete outfit, properly rigged to your specifications, ready to fish. The best part is you are supporting this forum!

Please feel free to give me a call at the shop at 937-434-8472.
