Default Marabou question, how do they do it?

Hey guys I need some help. I couldn't find my black Marabou this past weekend so I went into scavanger mode to get my buggers done. I tore into the the chest with all of our Halloween costumes and bingo! I found a black boa from one of my wife's costumes. As I took the boa apart to get to the feathers I realized that those crafty Chinese take feathers with thick stems and split them in half. Making two halfs that are much softer and easier to tie, These are pieces that I would normally throw away if I was working with lose feathers.
The million dollar question... How do they split a feather along the stem?

I'm guessing a very sharp exacto knife, good lighting, and skilled hands. Getting the feathers wet first so the fluff stays out of the way would likely help too.

I'd rather hunt fish than bait deer any day.

Wanted to reply earlier but couldn't stop laughing. I think I'm just going to buy a boa in every color I need. The rumor mill at the local craft store will be full tilt when I leave the register with a dozen feather boas!!!
