Exclamation Foreclosed Fishing Gear;

There is a thread on the board right now titled, [Please help] posted to General Discussions.

A first time poster seeks to learn the value of a rod that he has 'come across'. If you read the thread posts you may understand why I found this disturbing. Our forum lives because of the size of its membership and new members are the life blood of NAFFF but so many times I find first time posts from people who have no intention of becoming active participants in this group. Many people make their first post to our Classified threads looking to sell something and I keep busy just sorting out the active members from those who seek only to market an item. But the post I have chose to highlight to those who read this hit me hard.

Please be careful when responding to someone new who is asking only the value of some item of fishing gear. I will do here something I try to avoid. That thing, is to make a broad generalization; if a poster has access to a rod or other tackle and has no idea of the value there is perhaps a reason you should not immediately provide them with such information. There are any number of scenarios that could be contributing factors to such requests and the sale of the item is often the focus. Fishing gear can fall into the hands of a person who hasn't a clue of its value by any number of means (I'll leave that to the imagination) and this particular case bothered me.

My Regards,

Ard

Hi Ard: That post felt a little strange to me also. You really couldn't do this in the general discussion thread, but I know of another forum that is not fishing related, which only allows people to post in their classifieds section after having posted "X" number of times in other parts of the forum, until they have done so "X" amount of times the system simply will not allow them to post in Classifieds.

As it should Ard.
I am suspicious of most things for sale on the INTERNET I know that sounds caveman and stuff but...
Recently (last year) A thief in Colorado hit about a dozen fly shops and walked out of the shop's with thousands of $$ worth of rod and reel..he later tried to sell them on the local forums. Everyone on the boards were made aware of what happened due to local media running the story and the incipient chatter on the boards..At any rate the thief was caught and some of the gear returned...

Thumbs up Re: Foreclosed Fishing Gear;

Ard, I think you were right to question the situation, and I agree with FlyBum that no new member should be able to immediately list in the Classifieds. In fact, I thought the Forum had a rule to that effect already in place that required X number of postings over Y period of time before a classified could be placed.

Tom & Neal,

We have a 20 post rule here but it is not software enforced. I am the classified cop and I take out a pile of things from first posts to spam. Now I will be watching all forums for information mining posts that have a weird aura about them.

I hear you 100%, Ard....BUT....If a new poster offers a legit 7 1/2' Orvis Battenkill bamboo 4wt, let it ride for a few hours: I'm in the market, and optimistic that someday a wife will sell her husband's rods for what he told her they cost.

If the house were being forclosed on, without a doubt after the wife and family my first thought would be "but I still have my fishing gear"!

I agree this deal sounds fishy...
