Default Water Color/Clarity

Hey y'all,

I know that many of you think this is a newbie question, but... well... I kind of am a newbie still! haha.

Anyway, the question.
Depending on the water clarity, what color of fly should you use? I know that sometimes it doesn't matter, but still it would be nice to know.
What I'm saying, I guess, is do you use a fly that is close to the same color as the water or do you use one that is completely different from the water color. Same thing with clarity. Do you use a brighter fly for clearer water or vice-versa?

Thanks,
HookEmHorns

Default Re: Water Color/Clarity

Matching the fly to the water clarity can be very important, and for me it's my number one consideration when fishing for smallmouth.
Muted colors like brown, orange, and gold in stained water
Brighter colors like white, yellow, chartreuse, and silver in clear
Your basic black would be good for both
I also consider the color of the sky and I'll take that even further than the common "bright sky, bright fly, dark sky, dark fly.
I think about yellow in the full sun, orange at dawn, pink at dusk..
....especially the pink when the sky is the same color... wow
