Default Trying to learn to use your site

I just joined and am trying to learn to use your site and also learning about fly fishing. While reading an article on fly fishing in Idaho, I ran across the term "green drake hatch". At a loss as to what that is, I entered the term in your search box. The result was a number of threads, none of which contained the term. Can someone please explain how to do this and what the search results mean?

Also, what is a green drake hatch?

Welcome!

Fly fishing is all about getting a fish to take your fly. Hence, it is important that your fly resembles whatever the fish are eating at the time. Different insects emerge (hatch) at different times of the year and day.

A good fly fisherman develops entomology knowledge to "match the hatch": Select a fly that matches what the fish are eating.

There are tons of resources out there.

All of this can seem overwhelming but just go about it in a systematic way and you will learn quickly.

alabamian: First off welcome to the site! The article you were reading that referred to Green Drake was referring to a Mayfly called the Western Green Drake and their hatching on a river in ID. Here is a link to an article that explans more about the Green Drakes. Here in the Rockies they commonly hatch in the July-early August time period and dry fly fisherman love to time their fishing when the Green Drakes are hatching as they are a big Mayfly and the trout really key in on them during the hatch.

Hi alabamian,

Welcome to the forum.

The search engine will give you two types of searches. One displays threads that have the search word or words in the post contained in the listed threads. So your search result could have a list of many threads but your words would not appear.

The second search shows post that contain the words you search for. When you open the search window you select if you want to see the post or the threads that contain the words you are searching for.

A title of a thread may not have the words listed. For instance, you search for "Green Drake" which is a may fly. The thread title could be something like this: "What is a good may fly that I can use in Wyoming." When someone post an answer to that thread they could say: "A green drake is a good May fly for Wyoming." The search would list that post or that thread because it contains the words "Green Drake"

Try a couple of searches using both a thread or a post option and see what you get.

Frank

Hey Alabamian, welcome to the forum. You'll probably have a ton of questions as you start getting in to fly fishing so feel free to ask away--

We also have a lot of info in the FAQ section that might help, as well as stuff in past threads to browse through.

The Green Drake hatch is a big eastern hatch - mayfly. Great big things. The response from the fish can be mixed. I've seen fish go bonkers over them and I have seen no response at all.
