Default RESTRICTED TO ONE

Now you got to be honest with this answer.

If you had only one fly to fish with what would it be.
You can have the same fly in different sizes, and hooks, weigted or not and also tied in different ways. Nymph, dry etc.

You can define that fly as for,

Trout, Bass, Sunfish, Saltwater. Four flies to cover the catorgories ok.

Or you may have a fly that does great for all species ?

I will tell you what mine would be, and l have two of em.

For trout , withour a doubt a hares ear, With all the permutations that that fly can be tied with it just about covers it all. Nymph, emerger, dry, wet fly, soft hackle etc. There is not a river in the world that this fly will not catch you fish, l doubt.

For all other species, a gray marabou , that has caught me, reds, sea trout , bonefish, many other species of saltwater, all species of bass, sunfishes, carp, catfish, pike, trout, you name it.

Fire away guys.

Davy

Well… I suppose it would have little to do with several factors including the water and specific species that I’m fishing for. But you didn’t give me those options so I’m assuming the ONE fly would have to suffice for all waters and species. So here’s mine:

TROUT – Royal Wulff
This is a hands-down no brainer for me. Why??? My favorite type of fly fishing is dry fly fishing on small mountain streams. The Royal Wulff has killed the trout on every single small stream that I have fished (so far… many down and many more to go). Its also worked well on many big rivers. No doubt that I could probably catch more on a nymph, but so what? If I can catch 20 to 50 bows, browns, brooks or cutts on a dry then why nymph? Also, why try to match-the-hatch on a small stream if a Wulff will work regardless of the hatch? I suppose the Stimulator or Elk Hair Caddis would run a close second.

Bass & Bream – Poppers
OK… I know… I have limited myself with this pick, but I love using poppers. I am not the warmwater-fanatic like Cliff and a few others, so when I do go, I like the top water action. My favorite warmwater fishing is using poppers in late spring and early summer. I really never warmwater fish any other time of the year. Now don’t get me wrong here. When the top actions slows down, I’ll not hesitate to go with a streamer, but hey… you only gave me one choice. I have also had a lot of success with Orange Comets, Orange Wooly Buggers and Purple Wooly Buggers. The Orange Comet would be my second pick.

Saltwater – Gold Spoon Fly
Man… This is a very broad category. If I could afford to go bonefishing on a regular basis then I would have chosen a Charlie or something similar. Most of my saltwater fishing is redfishing, so the Gold Spoon Fly would be my choice.
