Default How to make a bamboo rod

I posted a series of pictures on the rod making process a while back on another website. I thought I'd do the same if you all were interested.

So to start you need some bamboo.

Then you need to heat treat it. In this case this is a blonde rod. I heated the inside, or pith, of the bamboo until is was red. Sorry I didn't get a pic of that.

Next comes the splitting part of the split bamboo. Some makers saw their strips. I use an old dull knife and twist so that the strips actually split apart. You steer the split by bend the strip to one side or the other.

So now you have some sticks.

Next I'll show how to straighten the strips and deal with the nodes.

I love watching the SBS threads by you bamboo guys, Lee. Everyone seems do it about the same way but each of you seems to have a little different take on tooling and technique. There's a lot riding on the details, huh?

OK. Part two. We have strips heat treated and split.

The strips have to be staggered. I use a 3-3 pattern. Which is basically placing one set of nodes in between the others on the adjacent strip.

The split strips are somewhere between very crooked and a "J".

So you heat them with a heat gun until they are straight. Easier said than done. Once they are straight you have to deal with the humps at the nodes.

I do this by heating them and pressing them flat in a vise. Sometimes you have to file away the pith side to allow for some displacement.

Once the node is pressed flat, it dressed with a file.

Next is the plane - action time.

So now the strips are straight, the nodes pressed and ready to put 60 degree angles on the pith side. You never plane the outside or enamel side of the bamboo.

Many people use a roughing form to put the 60 deg on the strips. I use the metal planing forms.
Click the image to open in full size.

I use a Stanley 9.5 plane.

Once the strips are planed to 60 deg then forms are set to start the taper. I always start at 0.030" over the final taper.

I use a thread gauge to make sure I maintain a 60 deg taper on the strips.

Next final planing.
