My biggest piece of advice:

Have fun! You don't have to catch fish to have fun. Enjoy the water, the trees, the surroundings. Listen to the water flowing over the rocks and around the banks. Smell the air and marvel at the beauty. There are worse things in life than not catching a fish. Sure, figuring out what a trout will sup on and then getting it to eat are joyful, but it's called "fishing" and not "catching" for a reason. Just my 2 cents.

Fly fishing provides a lifetime learning experience. There is the casting, the rigging of rod, knots, the gear, the bugs, if you dare--tying, the techniques. Have patience and have fun.

Best piece of advice,

You will catch more fish if you're line is in the water. Meaning several things

1) Too many false casts and recasts
2) Learn to cast to avoid "wind knots"
3) If you cant throw doubles without tangling up dont throw em until #2 is done.

And the absolute best advice was ....leave your phone in the truck
