Default Clousers

Everyone has said for smallies you need clousers (maybe a muddler minnow as well). So I am looking at buying a couple of them from Blue Fly Cafe. What color would you recommend for the Rum which by my area is mostly clear with a small tint of brown water? What size?

I agree with that...
Just want to "match" your local baitfish... Shad or whatever...

Olive or brown clousers work well as a sculpin imitation worked on the bottom like a jig. Smallies LOVE sculpins

A few colors to have are chartreuse/white,grey/white,all white and all black. An olive/white is also good to fish.As far as sizes go,it depends on your local baitfish but sz 2 is a good starting point.

Instead of buying all clousers you could mix it up little with some different sizes, colors and patterns to have a little more variety. Something like:

All Chartreuse or Chartreuse over White Clouser, size 2

Black Bead Head Wooly Bugger size 6

Crayfish imitation size 6 (if you can't find one, a Brown over Orange Clouser size 2 or Brown/Orange Wooly Bugger size 6)

Bead Head or Conehead Marabou Muddler (or other sculpin imitation in brown) size 6 or 4

Unweighted bright streamer like a white marabou muddler size 6 for swinging in current in shallower spots or top of the water column.

A top water pattern like a Gurgler, Sneaky Pete or popper that you can chug along the surface.

Btw, Clousers and woolly buggers are pretty easy to tie and use inexpensive materials that can be used for a lot of bass patterns. It MIGHT make sense to learn to tie a few-- though fly tying is a slippery slope as far as "saving money"...
