Default tying with out a vice

I recently watched "The Lost World of Mr. Hardy" and really enjoyed it. During the video it shows Tom Wethern tying a green highlander without a vice. I was amazed. I rewound it and watched it again. Finally, I had to try it.

So here it is, the first and possibly only fly I have ever tied or ever will tie without a vice. It went better than I expected. The hardest part for me was the dubbing loop for the body. It's not the best fly I have ever tied but it's not the worst either. I'm kind of happy with how it turned out.

Anyone else ever tie without a vice?

I think it's a beautiful job, but does have the random tweaked fibers so common to flies tied in this manner. As I said on that other forum, I couldn't match it WITH a vise! If you'd like to be genuinely sickened, check out Long's site: About : Classic salmon fly I spoke with a friend of his several months ago who assured me Long ties these free-handed.

Well-our fly fishing forebears did all their fly tying without a vice and when I began I didn't have a vice-had to save up my paper-round money to get one from Herter's. Can't say it was easy, but then those early fishers didn't even have Eyed hooks and used gut for their leaders and Silk lines so we obviously never had it so good!
