Wet Fly / Streamer Tie–Along - Pattern Recipes

Well, we've got over 20 people signed up for this tie-along now, which is a pretty good number. But, there's still room for more because this isn't a fly swap, so there's no need to tie multiple copies of any of the patterns; just one of each, unless you want them for your own fishing (which may not be a bad idea with the season about to open in most States in the next 4-6 weeks! ).

1. Partridge & Orange

a. Hook: Wet fly, 1xl, #12-#18 (Daiichi 1550 or equivalent)
b. Thread: Uni 6/0, orange / Pearsall’s gossamer silk, orange, or equivalent
c. Legs/Antennae: Hungarian Partridge hackle, brown or gray, or equivalent
d. Thorax: Dubbing (optional)
e. Rib: Wire, gold, fine (optional)

2. Woolly Bugger

a. Hook: Streamer, 3xl, #4-#12 (Daiichi 1720 or equivalent)
b. Thread: Uni 6/0, olive, or equivalent
c. Weight: Lead, .015 (optional)
d. Tail: Marabou, black

f. Hackle: Rooster neck or saddle, black, or equivalent

3. Adams Flymph

b. Thread: Uni 6/0, gray, or equivalent
c. Tag: Wire, gold, fine (optional)
d. Tail: Hen hackle fibers, mixed brown and grizzly
e. Body: Dubbing; muskrat, rabbit or blend, dark gray
f. Rib: Tying thread or fine gold wire (optional)
g. Wing: Hen hackle tips; grizzly, paired
h. Collar: Hen hackle, brown and grizzly

4. Picket Pin

a. Hook: Streamer, 6 xl, # 8-12 (Daiichi 2340, Tiemco 300 or equivalent)
b. Thread: Uni 6/0, black
c. Weight: Lead, .015 (optional)
d. Tail: Pheasant tail or hen hackle, brown
e. Body: Peacock herl
f. Wing: Gray Squirrel
g. Hackle: Rooster hackle, brown

5. Leadwing Coachman

a. Hook: Wet fly, #8-#14 (Mustad 3399 or equivalent)
b. Thread: Uni 8/0, black, or equivalent
c. Tag: Tinsel, flat, gold, x-small
d. Body: Peacock herl
e. Rib: Wire, gold, fine (optional)
f. Wing: Mallard Duck, lead
g. Collar: Rooster cape, brown

6. Black Ghost

a. Hook: Streamer, 4-8xl, #4-#10 (Daiichi 2340, Tiemco 765 TC or equivalent)
b. Tail: Hen hackle, yellow
c. Body: Floss, black
d. Rib: Tinsel, flat, silver, medium
e. Throat: Hen hackle, yellow
f. Wing: Hen saddle hackle, white, (4 paired hackles)

Feel free to substitute materials for the ones given in the recipes above. The recipe given is for the classic pattern, but each of these 6 patterns exists today in many variant forms, so experiment some, if you’d like.

Post or PM me with any questions that you have along the way.

I’ll post the Partridge & Orange photo step-by-step next weekend. I’ll also post some web links for each pattern, when available; to provide you with some alternative ways to tie up these patterns.

Thank you Allan. I think I have just about everything except some of the hen hackle colors. This looks like a great bunch of flies. I am looking forward to doing them.

Bob and Mark - welcome aboard!

Bob - good to see you back on the forum!

There's space for anyone who wants to join in, because this is not a swap - so there is not limit. The more participants, the more we'll all learn from each other.

I'll post the Partridge and Orange step-by-step next weekend (or before).
