Bi Visable,
January and February is the season for fly fishing and sportsmen's shows. I'm not sure if the circuit makes it to your area, but you may want to attend one. If you get a chance, walk around where the fly tiers are tying, and take a look at what they are using. Ask them why they like their vises.

Just from observation, here are the top three brands (not in any particular order) that I noticed being used.
  • Renzetti
  • Dyna-King
  • Regal

Holy ****...what a steal. I paid like $129. for mine like 20 years ago....
Plus the extras available for it are killer. The stem is going to be long on this being a clamp (which mine is) so it will sit taller in a base, but never been a problem for me.

Like MP said, check the local fly shows and talk to the demonstration tyers about their vises...I started with a Thompson "A", I have a Regal that I tye with at home most of the time. I also have a Dan-Vise that I purchased at a fly show; couldn't pass the deal. I use that when I tye a pattern that requires rotary function. I also have a Renzetti knock-off that I bought on E-Bay; it's my travel vise, and it works very well for what I paid for it. You'll have to decide for yourself...

Greetings....I use a Steverlynck w/pedestal base...They are manufactured in Buenos Aires. For saltwater I use a fairly inexpensive one which I can't remember the maker.
