Default Re: snapping thread

In my experience, two things generally cause thread to break: 1. nicking the hook tip, and 2. a rough surface on the outgoing face the bobbin. I use ceramic bobbins and before I set any of them up to tie a pattern, I test them out thusly:

1. Load 14/0 Sheer thread on the bobbin
2. Wind thread onto a bare hook. I use several different angles as I wind on; so that I can test the ceramic edges for rough spots
3. If I get a break, I take #600 sandpaper, form it into a cone, insert it into the ceramic mouth and rotate it back and forth to polish the mouth
4. Then I try #2. above again. If no breaks, then I have confidence in the bobbin and if I get a break subsequent to that sequence, I chalk it up to needing to improve my thread technique (which is not an infrequent outcome!)

Hope this help. Good luck!
