Default Success With Flies from The Salmon Fly Tie Along Thread!

I make a point of fishing what I tie and the patterns we made while participating in Pocono's Salmon Fly Tie Along were no exception. I went fishing for trout & grayling yesterday and my first choice on the leader was the Jock O' Dee, you may remember this as the last of the flies tied on the thread.

This is the fly I made during the program;

I tied that onto a #4 Partridge Bartleet salmon hook and here it is again.

The fly caught 3 fish that were very similar in size but there were at least 3 more missed hookups even though I waited for the fish to hook themselves. Finally I got into a dandy, I can only guess a 16" class fish based on what I saw in the clear water near shore because the fish came loose from the hook. After such a letdown I took a seat to let the run calm down and during that time I reflected on past experience with Arctic Grayling. Even a big grayling has a relatively small and soft mouth when compared to a trout of similar size. Whit this in mind I went into my little Wheatley clip box and found a Lady Caroline tied on a number 6 and I tied it on the leader.

This proved to be the cure for the missed fish and no more came loose from my fly, however I was not to see another fish of the proportions of the lost prize. At any rate the Lady C. caught a bunch and the day ended with great satisfaction having not only spent time on a beautiful creek but seeing the little Spey flies do what they were intended to do, catch fish

One of the Lady C. fish;

I'm going to tie some #10 and go back

Hi Guys,

AJ, they are there.

JP, the size of the fly is how I figure I lost the big one when I changed to the #6 I had a few that did not get hooked but those who did didn't come loose. I did get a nice one and have a picture but I'm saving it for another post

Chock up some nice fish for the Jock O'Dee! Those graylings look great!

I agree with Gary, the older patterns do work and it's always nice to see pics of one taking a good fish or two.

Thanks for posting.

Hi Allan,

The two flies were so effective (especially the smaller Lady C.) that it felt almost unethical to catch that many fish

Congratulations! You just can't go wrong with the classics. You did a fantastic job on them, and they are fish approved!

Oh no, you're not headed back to the ethical R&C topic, are you??..............

Landing nice fish on flies that you tie yourself is, I think, the best of fly fishing.
