Jimmie and Mosca both make a good points- take a look at the patterns you want to learn to tie for starters and review the recipes. Make a list of all the components that go into them, and see what they have in common.

Not to be TOO ANAL, but if you make a spreadsheet list the patterns in the leftmost column, then setup column titles for hook, bead, thread, tail, body, thorax, wing, ribbing, hackle, etc. and fill them in you'll find what they all use/have in common and what is differen.

Then you can determine what you can buy that will serve multiple purposes and what is unique to say one fly... and maybe then you can put that fly off, or bum/trade some material with another tyer so you can tie a few of those too.
