Question Popper tying question ???

Forum Tiers,

I have been tying flies for many years, but mostly dries,
nymphs & streamers. My question is for tying floating
poppers, especially for larger sized fish. If I'd buy some
foam bodies, what is used to seal off the foam, or better
what do you paint them with to finish the head ? Do you
use fingernail polish, or is there specific paint that can
handle the abuse ? I want to expand what I tie so I can
cover more bases.

I often don't seal the foam at all. As long as its closed cell foam, sealing isn't necessary. I try to buy poppers in the color I want them to end up being.

If I use a sealant, I prefer to use a flexible variety, like soft-tex, so that the surface won't develop cracks after a few fish.

Hi tie one on,

The trick is to buy closed cell foam bodies. You have to be careful with what you paint foam with. Some paints will dissolve the foam. Check out the "Palmer Paints". They are an acrylic paint and won't need to be finished. You could try an acrylic paint from the hobby shop but I don't have any experience with them. Cliff's suggestion of Soft Tex is a good idea but I find it slow to dry sometimes. You can also use Prismacolor Permanent Markers.

"PALMER ACRYLIC-PAINTS" NON-FLAMMABLE. Used to paint jig-heads, hard-foam poppers and plastic bug bodies. This water-soluble paint will not harm plastic body material, as lacquer will, PLUS EASY CLEAN-UP WITH WATER. 2-OZ SQUEEZE TUBE CONTAINER! COLORS: (1)Snow-White, (2)Sunlight-Yellow, (3)Pumpkin-Orange, (4)Nutmeg-Brown, (5)Brilliant-Red, (6)Summer-Green, (7)Baltic-Blue, (8)Avocado-Olive, (9)Passion-Purple, (10)Raven-Black, (11)Gold-Metallic, (12)Silver-Metallic $1.50/2-oz squeeze btl
