Reached a new level tonight...

Week 7, of an 8-week fly tying class tonight, and I mastered (or at least learned) the Elk Hair Caddis and the Matuka. But the bigger news for me, was that I was asked by my club to tie flys at the local LL Bean as part of a fly-fishing promotional on St. Paddy's Day Weekend! So either I'm improving enough as a fly tyier, or the club is very desperate! I owe a lot to all of the folks on this forum that have provided tips, advice, constructive criticism, and encouragement!

Next week we learn how to spin deer-hair!

That's awesome Rick! I have yet to approach the Matuka, but I like how when you tie caddis you have to leave the little head of elk hair on the hook-eye side for realism... definitely chopped that off the first few times!

As part of the tying demon on St Pat's, you can float a few of your elk hair caddis in some green beer....

One night while talking flies over beers, we got into talking about how particular flies looked when wet... one definitely ended up in my beer to demonstrate. The beer was still consumed, but the fly has yet to see use... I'd like to think I'm letting it age. ELk hair caddis floating on green beer sounds like a photo op!
