Default tying dumbell eyes on clousers

I wondered what the most secure method you fellas use for securing chrome dumbell eyes for flies like zonkers and clousers---on a recent trip i thought the eyes were pretty secure but they were moving around after a fish or 2

my method was to lay down a bed of 6/0 and figure 8 around the shank then go around the joint to tighten everything up---its ok for steelhead but didnt work on the albies

i was considering a dot of superglue at this point

what other methods do you use?

how many figure 8's do you make??? make sure you do enough, a small drop of glue will help, i prefer thinned goop cause it will stand up to saltwater...ca glue breaks down in time with water

I've had the best success tying them the way Bob does, though I generally leave out the thrread bump Tying Flies with Bob Clouser Check out the video http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/TyingClouserMinnow1.wmv to see him tying in the eyes.

I think the horizontal wraps around the diagonal wrpas you've already made is key. I also tend to use heavier thread for clousers and such than I normally would for a fly that size. Danville's flat waxed nylon is my favorite, by far.

Hi shorthaul,

The key to holding the eyes is the horizontal wrap around the figure 8. You need to use strong thread and wrap it as tight as you can. A drop of ZAP-A-GAP will hold every thing in place. Before you add the ZAP make sure the eyes are straight on the hook shank.

Frank

thanks guys---i watched the video---and thats pretty much what i was doing as far as the tying goes but with the 6/0 thread it wasnt building very fast or after the horizontal wraps they would still move a little so id repeat the process

---it looks like a heavier thread and a little drop of glue is in order
