Default Does anyone use circle hooks?

Just curious if they can or if anyone does tie up some flies using the circle hooks?

I use them for a few small saltwater baitfish patterns.

How effective are they? Is the hooking percentage as good as with standard "J" hooks?

A lot of people around here use them. Supposedly they're better for the fish as they will only hook in the corner of the jaw and never in the throat, gills, tongue, etc.
You have to remember NOT to set the hook as that will only pull the fly from the fish's mouth. You need to wait until the fish turns and runs, then the fly will slip to the side and the fish will hook themselves.

I use them a lot bait fishing for Sturgeon because they are so much better at not hooking a fish deep. The stupid Walleye will grab bait right of the bottom and you have to assume it's a Sturgeon so you give it the giant Sturgeon hookset and then it turns the poor little Walleye half inside out. I had taken a limits home of little Walleye home before I switched to circle hooks. I didn't see a reduced hookup rate. It takes remembering not to set the hook though. If you try and set it you take it away from the fish, or at least a good portion of the time. You also need to get them with no offset or they can still gut hook a fish.

That all being said, I don't hook very many fish deep fly fishing and it seems to only really be needed for bait. At least for me. I did use them in the fly I tied for Sturgeon and I got several other species by accident in the process. I did not hook a single one deep.

Actually Mustad makes circle hooks for small streamers, in stainless.

I use them for all my streamer flies I find that I don't lose any. Because of the hook it self. It's more my own doing. I will post a pic of one when I can figure out how to do it from my iPhone.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm gonna have to try them out. I have heard of them when using conventional tackle just wasn't sure about flies.
