Stripped Peacock quill alternative?

I have a pattern that asks for stripped peacock. no issue stripping off the quill using an eraser, but the color of the quills are too green/blue

Any alternative to these, or are is there somewhere else on the feather I need to look for quills that are more brown?

Thanks.. Dave

Hi Dave,

If you have a brown hackle cape or saddle feathers just strip one of them. If the color suits then soak the stems a little in warm water prior to tying them in. the soak makes them very flexible and I always liked the segmented affect better than peacock. They are also tougher than stripped peacock, for a real tough body, coat the wrapped quill with some tying cement before continuing with the rest. That will keep the quill body together through a lot of sharp little teeth.

PS. You may find that a medium blue dunn will make some great body color quills also, experiment :)

Osrich quill maybe? The color would differ depending on the die job, but it might be too big.

The eye feathers are the one to use for stripped quills

No substitute for the real thing

GOOGLE for "polish quills". You'll find what your looking for.

Strip the center eye quills. Do a whole eye in 10% bleach solution, then dye them if you wish

Thanks Ard.. I have done that for some flies.. it does make a nice segmented look
this one is a small nymph, I'm trying to keep a very slender profile

For the eye quills.. The quills that make up the eye itself?

I'll have to look up how to bleach these

Re: Stripped Peacock quill alternative?

I understand if you are after a certain size and there are some flies I would use only Peacock on but....... if and when it became a problem I went to quills and especially when being creative. For the bleach method Eunan described go 9:1 in what ever quantity, 9 part water to 1 part bleach.

Time = ?? start at 45 seconds swishing the eyy around, pull it, rinse and see if all the fibers are gone, repeat as needed to get them bare. It won't hurt to have a cup of water with an ounce of white vinegar in it handy to stop the burn, then final rinse & dry.

I never did one but have bleached a bunch of other materials and what I said will be a good starting point.

I'm not sure if these artificial quill materials will be what you want.

The best way to strip quills is to use gulf wax .melt wax in Altoid can dip quill in wax strip with finger nail the qulll will be more pliable and easier to wrap

Will Moose Mane work for you?

Use a dark one and a light one together for a cool look.
