Default What is it?

I recently acquired some more fly tying materials. Can somebody tell me what this tool is called and how it is used?

It's a hair stacker, I think.

Oh, that makes sense. I use one of the other types: brass two piece kind that you tap on the table.

Thumbs up Re: What is it?

WW's got it right: A hair stacker. As to how it's used you take the 'stiff hair' (Elk, Deer, etc.) cut the bottoms off as straight as you can and into the 'stacker' and trim back as needed. From there onto the hook.

Edit: Most of new ones are round and I've found them to be a pain where you sit. Old, functional, gets the results desired.

Thanks. I can see that now. I just had not seen this type. I'm sure it works quite well. I'll have to tie same elk hair Caddis patterns and use both types of hair stackers and see which I prefer.

Keep us posted (no bad pun intended).

I think that that "shoe horn" style is more for stacking bucktail and to even out streamer feather wings
... long stuff
