Recycled Hooks

It's amazing how many beat up flies I have acquired over the years. I usually place them into empty salsa cups.

I decided to strip off the old materials off of bugger hooks. After all was said and done, I was able to retie 26 Woolly Buggers in different sizes, colors, some with beadheads, some without. All the hooks were still sharp.

One day, I will sort all the hooks by type: dry, nymph, steelhead, streamer. That will be a task. There are well over 100 flies in the cups.

Some of the hooks showed some rust. A touch up of steel wool cured that.

Good fellow; a 'well loved' fly always works best. Ever notice that you'll have a dozen of some pattern and 'one' out of the batch will continually hook fish. The other 11 just get looks.

Depending on what I'm tying, I go to my recycle pile first. Three cigar boxes worth. They're not all worn out flies, many are "what was I thinking ??" gobs on a hook.
Large, easy to strip saltwater hooks are often recycled multiple times until they rust or the point is worn down to a nub

I do the same thing. Stainless hooks and anything with a beadhead gets retied. This reminds me, have you ever noticed that flies only fall apart when you don't want them to? When I'm cutting them down I'm amazed at how well they hold together, when I'm fishing them I cant believe how fast they come apart.

They fall apart even faster when it's the last fly of that sort in your box
