What would be a good color to use as a background to take Pics. The camera I have is a Olympus D-540 3.2 megapixel

Hi seajay,

You can use just about any color if you are good with your lighting and exposure. I like blue, green or beige. A color I don't care for is black. Black can work but in many photos I have seen the fly doesn't get enough light and the color of the fly is lost. There is a difference between an artsy picture with soft light and shadows than a picture you are showing off how a fly is tied. In my book any picture that doesn't show the true colors of a fly is a poor picture.

You will find that lighting is very important and usually a flash is not the answer.

Frank

Well the only lighting is the overhead light and my tying light, then the flash. This is mainly a point and shoot, with a Macro and adjustable wide to telefoto lens. Nothing fancy. Guess I can pick up a Blue & Green piece of poster board. And give it a go.

I prefer blue or white. The important thing is not to use a color that is predominant in the fly as it will wash it out.

Here are a few examples:

All of these were taken with a white background. Post-production changed the background to a light gray color.

I am by no means a professional, but my fly photos were published with a recent article I wrote for Flyfishing & Tying Journal, Winter 2011, so I assume they are passable.

I am currently looking for a new light-box for my photos, and have found a few options from my query in this thread: Photographing Flies - Use of a lightbox

Kelly.
