Looks like it's used mainly for the elusive Santa Claus fish

I have just been making fishing flies, nothing fancy. Here is a wet fly version. I did these back a few months ago. The streamer version I am working on has calf tail for the wing. I might get a couple of photos for them tomorrow. These are just fishing flies, so they aren't gonna be an immaculate tie or anything! I got the idea for the photo below version from Fly Fish Ohio. I love their patterns there, great videos too.

Well Calftail, after talking to you, I decided to take a photo of one of the streamers... This one has a more sparse wing, than most of the others. Most of them don't have quite a wide area of herl either. But I wanted to take a photo for my Photobucket journal. Yes, even some fishing flies. This fly pattern I added fine wire to the peacock herl in the butt section. This fly I used thread only, and added a little head cement, to hold up to the fish better.

Kelkay and Calftail, I still use all of those. Calftail, I'll give you my best stocker flly,,lol,,maybe you are right after all,,,it's the Royal Trude tied dry and fished with just enough weight to make it wander around like a royal wet. Deadly on dumb trout LOL..seriously it is. I 'think' maybe the stiffer dry hackle makes it look super good. I dunno for sure.
