Default What's hot right now?

I'm becoming very interested in fly fishing and fly tying. I'm actually getting a fly fishing combo this weekend. Not many, if any, trout in my area of East-Central Illinois. I'm wondering what fly patterns are working right now on pan-fish and bass (large & small mouth)? I have no flies at all so any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks.

Kevin

Kevin, for the gills you can't go wrong with foam spiders, bead head hares ears, and some mini streamers.

Especially if you are new to tying, try some foam like Dan said. I personally love black and/or brown foam beetles on a size 14-16. Yummy bluegill food. Although I've always said that you can catch a buegill with a snelled hook and a ragged thread from your sock any day of the week. My good buddy is the Largemouth expert but he doesn't get on here much. He lives in Channahon IL. and does Largemouth on the fly often. Wooly buggers with rubber legs work for smallies. Those will keep you busy for a while.

I have had recent success for smallies on the dupage with a deep clouser minnows, chartruese and white. Also picked a few up on wooy buggers (of course) and crayfish patterns. Still learning here but good luck.

you can tie marabou on the back of the hook and continue tying marabou to top of fly than tie on red rubber strings (i got mine from a bass spinner bait at walmart).. idk if that helps... i have caught 6 or 7 bass and prolly 12 crappie with flies like these! Have fun!
