Default August 2011 Trip...

Well, I'm back from my trip to Michigan...ended up just fishing the Pere Marquette for four days. Had a blast!! It turned out to be more of a teaching trip as I was teaching the GF how to fly cast and fish. And as I was told miltiple times..."this is not as easy as it looks." and "there's too much stuff to remember to do!!". All in all, we had a great time and will do it again. Only managed to catch one fish...a salmon or steelhead smolt as far as I can tell. But we did have a few takes while throwing hoppers, just couldn't get the hook set. Saw some monster salmon (20+ lbs) in the river, just couldn't entice them to take anything. Anyway, on to the pictures:

About a 4 lb Brown (just below the leaves between the logs) that I couldn't get to take anything. I must have left a dozen flies in the trees around him.

Hi Mack,

That is a great report and it's good to see that a lack of fish didn't dampen the spirits for either of you. Your last photo reveals that you two make a handsome couple and I wish you many years of happy fishing together.

Mack: Great report, photos and girlfriend! I've been told by numerous members on the forum to not try and teach my girlfriend how to fly fish so I have been leaving that up to FF guides, so far she is making some good progress but has a lot to learn.
I can see how you would loose some flies going after that brown, he was tucked into a pretty tight spot.
Would love to own a cabin like that on some nice stream! LOL!

Next time you go you might try swinging soft hackles from M-72 to Green Cottage. They saved the day for me up there a few times in the thick of summer. It's an easy technique to teach your fishing partner too.
I had the good fortune to fish quite a few places but my heart still pines for some of those Michigan streams.

Looks like a fun trip! And as far as not catching the big ones... call it a scouting trip!

Thanks everyone!!

We had a great time together and will fisihing together for a long while to come. Like me, she just enjoys being out in nature and didn't care if she caught anything or not. She really enjoyed the peacefullness of being out on the river, leaving it all behind, and just going with the flow...she's hooked. Puns intended.

As for the soft hackels...I'll remember that for next time. Thanks Jackster.
