Default Survey looks at why anglers stopped fishing for trout

Petchenik worked with DNR's licensing staff to run a query of the automated licensing system to see how many people bought a trout stamp for every year 2004-2008 but stopped buying the stamp after 2008. That total was 2, 268. Those people received a letter to verify their address was still current. The survey design called for 800 of them to get a survey in the mail to fill out and return. The surveys were mailed out the second week of October.

I would be interested to see the results of the survey myself.

Yes, as Dan says, that would be interesting to learn the results.

Simply looking at the dates, one could make a pretty educated guess the economy taking a dump played at least a partial role in this...

Here in Southwest Michigan, where I spend at least 200 days a year on the water, I have clearly seen a trend of more anglers fishing for native species than they did say 10 years ago. I think the "rush" of fishing for the introduced species such as steelhead, Brown Trout and Salmon have slightly declined. I also think many anglers have moved on in pursuit of other species that tend to allow for one to fish for them in more tranquility...

There was a time when the majority of out of state plates here on the Joe would have been here to fish for Salmon or steelhhead, now that has definitely changed as most out of staters are here to fish for Walleye now...

Who knows, would be cool to see the results of that survey...
