Winter Steelhead on the fly

Has anyone been out doing any winter Steelheading? It's just starting to get good right now. Once the temp goes over 40 it only gets better, as long as the rivers or streams don't get blown out. It was brutally cold yesterday, but the last few trips I have been landing them consistently. The CFS is quite low on open rivers right now, which doesn't seem to have much effect on the Steelhead. However, I have not heard of, or hooked up with many lake-run Brown Trout, which are usually quite prevalent this time of year. Finding Steelhead hasn't been too much of a problem, thankfully. This is my biggest of 2012 so far, a 9 pound hen with great coloration.

i been out to the P.M. quite a bit this winter for the steelhead, had the biggest steelhead of my life on and all the way to my feet but when i went to net it i broke one of my 8wt's. i guess i got to excited when i seen how big it was. i learned something that day- always keep your cool even if you have a monster on-

Easier said than done sometimes huh? :) I know exactly what you mean. It's nice to see others out there braving the elements. Going back at it tomorrow.

I haven't been out on the Ohio tribs since fall, I'm just not into this season for some reason. Once the waters get upwards of 50 degrees or so I plan to hit the tribs. Though I'll foolishly be fishing dries just for ***** and giggles. Who knows it might pay off....if anything it could make it a little more interesting.

@gatortransplant. Interesting coloration on those steelhead. Are you fishing in very clear water? I like the male you landed. Great work.

Re: Winter Steelhead on the fly

The colored up male was in gin clear water, the bottom hen was in pretty clear water (you can kind of see in the photo), and the water for the other fish was, well, a bit stirred up! Some clarity in the run, but I landed the fish in the slack pool so it looks especially murky.
