Default Monster Spring Steelhead 03-29-2012

Timing the Steelhead run can give you fits and force you to sit at the gas pump shaking your head. I am here to tell you it was worth the wait and long hours checking water temps, levels and fish sign.

I fished the same areas for 2 days never saw the same fish twice. I caught fish that were fresh and fish that had spent a portion of time in the river already.

The CFS had been quite high due to the little run off we DID have. Levels have fallen and with it, made fly fishing easier. The temps then plummeted to under 40 degrees which seemed to keep a huge push of fish from entering the rivers. The fish we found were scattered but extremely active.

This was my biggest Steelhead ever landed.

Wow James, that's one heck of a fish. I got out after chromers for the first time this month and went Woe-and-Three. The best was a fish that launched itself from the water the instant the hook found the corner of its mouth. Didn't even have time to bow before the tippet snapped.... beautiful sight though!

Sure is good to see someone actually landing them

Thanks guys. I haven't exactly been getting shut out, but a certain river gets them for only a few days most years. You have to time it correctly. Like all rivers, it varies from year to year because of runoff, rain and temps, but this year turns out to have all of those key elements. Once they start cutting redds, I leave them be. Right now they are insanely aggressive.

Landed 6 two days ago and 4 yesterday. I'll be going back out later today.

Thank you jpbfly. It took somewhere near a half an hour to land him. My brother taped the battle (and botched the first net attempt.)

I had to edit out some because it would take far too long to watch.
