Default Re: Hello New to Spey fishing

Welcome to the forum,
Like others have said try not to get hung up on all the numbers, grainage/sink rates for tips and trying to figure each out just yet. The type 3 sink tip that you have will take your fly down to the middle of the water column approx. your type 6 will take it down lower in the water column, so, higher the number, higher the sink rate. I find that as the densities get thicker the tips become more combersum to cast. Most beginners do well with either a floating or intermidiate tip that doesnt bite the water as hard as those heavier tips. Poly-leaders are also tips you can utilize, they are lighter in grains and work well on presentation lines such as a scandinavian taper or (scandi). I would suggest you call a shop that carries spey gear, tell them your spey rod specs. and they can suggest proper grain weights, ask them for an Airflo scandi compact, maybe also get a few floating and intermediate poly-leaders (tips), then after that simply attach 2-3 feet of straight cut material such as 10lb. maxima or whatever material you prefer then tie on the fly. You will also need a running line for the scandi compact roughly .35 to .40 in diameter, again the shop can help you with this. It all sounds confusing but if you start with the package I just suggested that would be a good place to start and get you casting in no time. Just a few suggestions, some here may disagree with my methods, but they worked great for me and others I have since taught the art of spey. If you have any questions for me send me a PM. Hope this stuff helps, I know its a lot to digest, but good luck.
