Default leader to tippet construction.

Ok I have done a few searches an I am still confused on this.
I do a loop to loop connection for my fly line to my leader.
then my leader to my tippet is dbl surgeons.
As of right now I use about a 5ft piece of 10lb mono an then go to a 4ft piece of 3X tippet.

My issue is I just cant seep to get the fly to flip over all the time.
I go after pan fish an use mostly size ten hooks that I tie up.
Now I do use some poppers but I by those.
Iv done some reading an they say to construct the leader in three steps.
Heavy med light. An how long should I make each section.

My question is what wait is my tippet an what weight should I start with.
My rod is a 5 weight.
I got it as bass pro shop it is one of there brands that came with the rod reel an line.

I have even tried to look this up using google an I just get more confused.
Thanks for all the help in advace

Hi Dave,

Here is a very handy chart that may help you out. You can see the relative diameter and weight of tippet material.

I think you would be better off to buy a 7' tapered leader and use it. It will solve most of your problems. With you present setup your 3X front material is too long. It should be half the length you are using. If that doesn't resolve your problem you may need to make the butt section with heavier material.

Yes, looping your leader to the fly line is a good way to do it. It is also OK to fasten your tippet on with a Double Surgeon knot, a Blood knot, double Uni knots or a Loop to Loop knot. I use the Loop to Loop knot to fasten a tippet or double Uni knots. Its according to what I am doing.

Here is a FAQ that shows the correct way to fasten two loops together. It is important to do it correctly.

Frank

Thaks for the info frank.
The only problem is the nearest fly shop from me is about 2 hrs away.
From what the chart says that you posted my 3x tippet is 6lb.

So If I do a 3ft section of 20lb then a 2ft section of 10lb an then a 2ft section of 3x tippet, that should work, correct.

When I got the rod it came with a tapered leader. But in my just learning to fly cast the tree monster ate it.
I probably should look at getting a new fly line as well soon.

I dont mind tying my own leader an tippet. I do know its cheaper that way.
An money is an issue for me.
An I all ready have the mono at home.

I am using a loop to loop to connect my leader an fly line an I did the loops like you showed in the pics. I use the perfection loops.

Now do you do a loop to loop to connect the leader to the tippet as well?
Thanks again
DAVE

One person's opinion, you may want to try something called a furled leader. In my mind, they much simpler to use and preform noticeable better, specifically in terms of turning over your tippet and fly .

thanks for the tip on the furled leader.
I did some research into it an decided to try my hand at making a few.
From what I read it should be a long version since I will mostly fish still water.
But I do in tend to make a few short versions as well.
I belive the final leader with out tippet will be about 75 to 80 inches.

Just waiting on my drill to charge an then I can make my set up board.
Will let you all know how it turns out

Well here is a small up date so far.
I managed to make two furled leaders tonight.
Only problem is the first one I did not twist the stands enough an I had a bit of slack so you could see some slack in the leader. Manly around were the loops were hooked together.

The second one turned out way better.
I twisted the lines a lot more an I did not have the slack at the loops like the first one.
Then failure. I hung it up an it started to furl its self.
It got spinning so fast it some how spun the weights off.
An then it snaked up on its self.
I did manage to straighten it out an get it to furl the rest of the way.
But you could see it had kinks in it.
But man did it look good other wise.
Hope fully 3rd times the charm.
wish me luck
later

WooooHoooo
Sucess. The third time was the charm. I learned my lesson with the weight an papper clips. I cut the paper clip an bent it so it formed a tight loop that help the weights onto a snap swivel. No flying off now.
It turned out great. Nice even taper right to the end. an then I was even able to make the funky loops. I would have to say that was the hardest part.

for the hell of it I tied a 20 inch piece of my 3X on the end.
I tried to cast by hand an it flipped it right over.
I plan on tying a few of these up for spares.
I am all so planing o trying a few with some thread in the size that is recomed in the PDF down load.
any ways Ill try to get a few pics up of what it looks like when done.
Later
