I heard this morning that the Japan earthquake was an 8.9, that is almost the same size as the 1964 earthquake that hit Alaska which was a 9.2 and it did a tremendous amount of damage.

Earthquakes like 9.5 in Chile in 1960 then the 9.2 in Prince Williams in '64.
This is scary stuff

So far so good here. They arent putting out much for warning on the local media. No evac orders or anything. I heard about this late last night local time. There is no doubt that between our history from the big one in 64 and seeing the heart wrenching footage of what happened in 2004 that this is not something taken lightly.
It sounds like California is more in danger at this point.

The news just showed a video of the quake. It lasted a crazy long time. Scarey.
Also, hard to imagine those waves travel as fast as they do.

No significant wave action here yet. My region has no risk and there are NPR affiliates in Homer and one in Seward, Kodiak, etc. I have heard nothing yet about those areas having waves.
