I may not be around a computer tomorrow so I'll make my short speech today, one day ahead of the anniversary.
Five years ago I was searching something (God knows what) regarding fly fishing and one of the results was a thread here on the forum. I checked out the thread and the rest as they say is history. Being a transplant here in Alaska removed me from any friends and all my fishing haunts, fly shops and streams alike. The forum became a sort of support group for this wayward and often wandering fly fisherman and I have enjoyed the outreach enormously.
I had never imagined that friendships would form when I made that first post but some have. There have been 3 members who have came to Alaska to meet and fish with me and I look forward to more in the future. I would like to send a special thank you to Frank Whiton who is 'The Godfather' of these pages. Frank was here when I registered and it is through his efforts that this has become such a wonderful place for us to meet up both in cyber space & in person. I wrote an article that never published about Forums almost 2 years ago and if you have time you could find it here;http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/fo...ut-forums.html
A Big Thank You goes out to everyone who participates here because you all help to make my life a little more interesting on a daily basis.
GREAT post Ard and happy anniversary! I can't imagine what it's like to make such a drastic change of life as you have made but I can see where a community like this one would make it more manageable. I have frequented numerous forums over the years and this is by far one of the very best. There are a few others I look at but this is where I chose to contribute. The content, collaboration, and membership are truly second to none. The wealth of knowledge here is nothing short of astounding. The behind the scenes stuff done by the mods makes this an excellent place to visit and spend a few hours each day. The lack of "garbage" that is so frequent on other forums I have visited simply does not exist here.
Thanks to all that contribute through posts and administrative duties.
As one of the 3 that has made the journey north to meet Ard, his lovely wife Nancy, and their awesome 4-legged bear dog 'Boss', I can bear witness to the fact that Ard is as true a person as you'll ever meet. I'm honored to call him my friend.
I can't say where the past 5 years have gone Ard, and it might be a longshot, but I'd take a look and see if they are where we found your cherished filet knife.....
Geez....I just realized that come December it'll be 5 yrs for me too.
Happy anniversary, Ard! I'm glad you found this forum five years ago, because had you not, I would never have learned so much nor been inspired so much in my own short time on this forum. Maybe I'll be so lucky as to make it up to Alaska to fish with you some time in the future.
So thank you for joining and remaining a part of this forum for those years, and I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping you're here on the forum with us for many years to come.
