Resin for making coasters?

I want to make a few coasters similar to this.

I was curious, would flex coat do this? Or could I find something better? I was just curious about flex coat because I have a fair amount left from building my fly rod and would rather use it than let it sit around and go bad. I did something like this and used flex coat to fill in a depression on my calculator to cover my name and make it permanent but I dont know how well 3/4" of flex coat would cure? Could you get it flat?

You can also get casting resin to do it. I think in bulk it is a heck of a lot cheaper than flex coat. By the way Flex coat will store for quite a while. You may decide to build another rod.

I always called it 'clear acrylic resin' and could get it at craft & hobbie shops. Could be the same thing Dan linked...........

How long will flex coat sit on the shelf? I already have the blank and components to build another rod. I already want to build another Winston or Sage, and I sort of want to try making a spinning rod. College has just put a hold on those projects. Time and money are of the essence.

I will have to run to the craft store and see what some resin costs.

For the coasters, is there any reason you can't just get hi-build polyurethane like you see on a lot of bar/restaurant tables?

Polyurethane is a PITA, I hate the stuff because you have to build it up in small layers or else it seems to either dry weird, not dry at all, or get a murky color to it.

I have never tried the highbuild though, maybe it will work differently.


Also, I want to try doing something with setting flies in this resin, anyone think of a neat thing someone could make?

the hi-build poly should work fine....
it is used in allot of applications similar to those coasters.
